What to check before you buy web hosting

I have signed up with a lemon more than once. The sales page always looks fine. The problems show up later: the renewal is three times the intro price, the backup they take daily cannot actually be restored, and support lives in a ticket queue that replies after the site has been down for a day.

Top 10 lists will not tell you that. They are ranked by who pays the affiliate the most. So here is the boring version. The checks we actually run before we would put a site on a host. Each one is a short post. None of them ask you to trust a ranking. For why those roundup pages look the way they do, read The Truth About Hosting Review Sites.

CPU and resource limits are a longer story. The honest version of that is still what overselling means when it comes to web hosting.

I still use the host list for what other people actually experienced. These checks are for the bits a star rating will never tell you. If a host gets cagey about any of this, you already have your answer.
